Litany of the Holy Angels

angel987

Angel of God, my Guardian Dear, to whom His love commits me here: Ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

I composed this litany back in 1999 for either private or group recitation, and have used it to great effect. It’s based on the Litany of the Saints and can be used prior to saying the Rosary, or personal prayer, candle rituals, group devotion, or any exercise directed toward manifesting your intentions.

The parts in italics are responses said by those assisting you. If you’re praying privately, then you say all these yourself.

When using this litany magically, say the name of the Archangel who presides over your intentions where the Prayer at the end says “N.” When using as an act of devotion, don’t include any Archangel’s name when you say the final prayer.

Making Prayer Work with Your Sphere of Availability

Danse_et_G_bougie_et_mains_levees_photo_MC_Martin_

The following comes from The Magic of Effective Prayer. The complete book is available for only $2.99 on Amazon.

The Sixth Key – Your Sphere of Availability

Many books talk about the wonders of prayer but not about the pray-er’s limitations. In so doing, they set the reader up for failure.

We worship a God who is great and can do anything. Yet we ourselves are finite creatures, setting limitations on what we can receive through what’s called our Sphere of Availability.

The Sphere of Availability involves the truth that we can only attract as much as we’ve built a channel to attract. As we work on our lives and the areas where we want more goodness to manifest, more will be attracted as we move forward.

Consider a socially-awkward person who prays to find an ideal mate. This person is likely lonely, and being socially awkward would make this person less able to attract someone naturally.

This person’s prayer may likely not be answered by having his or her ideal dreamboat show up at the front door, because he or she may not have the social network to meet such a person, and even then the skill set to attract that person and seal the deal. Instead, this prayer may be answered by serendipitously finding a book or a YouTube video about how to talk to people. Further prayer may be answered by finding more friends and expanding his or her social network. Once those friendships are established and the skill set becomes a little more polished, then a potential romantic partner may appear.

You see this is a progression, a matter of steadily expanding the person’s Sphere of Availability through a combination of self-improvement and smaller prayers being answered over time. It’s when we recognize this pattern of improvement and availability that we can make the most out of effective prayer.

Molecular Thoughts

Consider likewise a person who wants a CEO job. If this person doesn’t have the skill set to be a CEO – finance, administration, leadership, and so forth – then praying for the job won’t go anywhere. And if for some reason such a prayer was answered (maybe to teach a lesson?), that person would fall flat on their face the first day on the job. Better to work on improving oneself first by way of schooling (insofar as possible), maybe even taking a few business classes for free on Alison, reading books on entrepreneurship and leadership, and experience by launching their own startup.

Granted, something like this may never lead to a CEO job at a Fortune 500 company, but by the time that startup is successful, why would you want to work for someone else anyway?

This is all there is to the Sphere of Availability, and it’s an important concept because it addresses the limitations we put on ourselves. If you want to expand the results you get from your prayer life, then work to enlarge your Sphere of Availability.

The Pentagram and Christian Magicians

marktkirche

The following is taken from The Magic of Catholicism, pp. 209-214. For more information on the Pentagram and how it fits into Christian magical systems, please see this book and Ritual Magic for Conservative Christians.

Unlike what some paranoid alarmists would have folks believe, the pentagram is not a diabolical device, but an abstract sign of the crucifixion.”[1]

The above quote gives a perfect summation of everything that could be said on the subject. In and of itself, before we consider it a symbol, we must consider the pentagram is first and foremost a geometric shape. Last time I checked, nobody owns the copyright on geometric shapes.

While nobody owns a copyright on geometric shapes, things can be said differently once the shape passes on to the realm of symbol, and the pentagram has been used as a symbol by many cultures, including Catholicism. Continue reading

Candle Colors and History

Candles 6-inch 800W

A good post was made at the Rue’s Kitchen Facebook Group today, asking about candle colors and magic.

Historically, candles didn’t come in colors till the 19th century. So what did folk magicians do before then?

Historically, if candles were used then there was no color choice to worry about. Just use get a candle and use it. This means a white or “unbleached” candle can be used for any and all purposes.

Before candles, there were tallow and olive oil lamps, depending your part of the world. There’s also a fish in the Pacific Northwest called a “candlefish,” a kind of smelt that native peoples in the region once burned to provide lighting. In short the human ingenium always found a way to illuminate the dark.

While I don’t suggest burning fish, what I’m saying is there’s a wide-open assortment available to you, and your candle magic doesn’t strictly have to involve candles.

Remember that candle magic is a variety of folk magic, and folk magic – throughout most of human history – has traditionally been the magic of the very poor, people who usually couldn’t afford the “good stuff.”

So if you’re looking for reconstructionist purity, to do things exactly as the practitioners of old did, then you want to limit your supplies to the cheapest available or what you can make yourself, with no dyes, or limit your use of candles to the votive rack at the local church.

If, on the other hand, you’re more interested in what works best for you, then feel free to experiment with all the options available: dyed candles, oil lamps, electric lightbulbs, even lighting a candle at the church and linking it to a candle you have lit at home (how many of you have tried that one?).

Ultimately, it’s a question of what your philosophy emphasizes more: whether you place more emphasis on doing things exactly as the ancestors did, or more emphasis on getting results.

See Christian Candle Magic for more information on the different types of candles and how to use them.

Reading List for Christian Magicians

Book List

This is cool. Seriously cool.

There’s a reading list for Christian magicians over at Goodreads. Mostly geared toward folk magicians, it covers a range of cultures as well as traditional and modern authors.

Special thanks to the user kaizokuhime for compiling this list, and I highly recommend perusing its contents for a more thorough background on Christian magical practice.

An Ecumenical Theology of Christian Magic

Magic Theology

The following is an excerpt from Ritual Magic for Conservative Christians. To read more, click this link.

Theology, then, is fundamentally an attempt to make positive and constructive statements about who God is – and who we are in light of who God is.”

– Michael Jinkins

If the goal of this book is to bring an orthodox magic to Christians from as many denominational traditions as possible, then our first task must be in laying the groundwork for an ecumenical – that is, “across the board” – theology of magical Christianity.

This is no small task, as differences of almost every stripe exist across the denominational spectrum, ranging from Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy which are pretty much pre-packaged magical systems in a state of denial, to the Five-Point Calvinists and Rationalists who intentionally and methodically divorced every shred of spirituality from their religion.

On the one hand, our theology must take into account these denominational differences. On the other hand, our theology must accept that there are some groups – like the Continue reading

Necessity, Desire, and the Machinery of the Universe

Machinery

The Machinery of the Universe

Most modern ceremonial magicians talk about something they call the “Spiritual Experience of Yesod,” the “Astral Light” or “Foundation,” and they call that experience the “Vision of the Machinery of the Universe.” It was seven years ago when I had mine.

May 10, 2009, I was in a head-on car crash with a 17-year old from the suburbs, and yes she was driving her daddy’s SUV. I ended up with a broken arm and my knees had collided with the dashboard. To top it off it was Mother’s Day, and I really dreaded calling my mom to tell her what happened to her son on what was supposed to be her day.

PIC-00170

This was my van. I was in the driver’s seat.

Of course that was a long day, and it turned into a months-long process as my body began the process of healing. A settlement was needed to get through part of this, and at the time my prospects were unknown.

I began to pray the Rosary every day. “Ave María, grátia plena, Dóminus tecum . . .

Manifestation: Ain’t Nuttin’ to It But to Do It!

david_vs_goliath_color_comp_wip_by_nickhuddlestonartist-d68tsu1

Today I was reading Mark Landry’s blog and came across his post about David and Goliath. He describes the possibility that the story is mistranslated, that David actually hit Goliath in the greaves (shin armor) instead of the forehead, and shares his take on the moral of the story:

David didn’t win the battle because of his skill, but because of his willingness to simply walk onto the field and face a giant – he believed that there was something that would fight for him – but nothing would happen until David engaged.

God, Gender, and Modalism

createdfromnothing

I’d like to take a moment to talk about God and gender. I’ll start by saying there’s one place the Hebrew Scriptures depict God as having a uterus (Job 38:8, re-worded in many versions), yet nowhere does the Bible say that God has testicles or a penis.

Does this mean that God’s actually a woman? There’s a priest in Boston who had a near-death experience and says this is exactly the case.

Yet what of others who’ve had near-death experiences and perceive God as male?

This is where I side with traditional Church teaching, that God is all genders and no gender (CCC 239). When some people see God as woman in near-death experiences and others see God as man, this is where I subscribe to a type of modalism.

No, I don’t mean the theological Modalism that denies the Trinity and teaches the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are all “masks” God wears depending on how He wishes to speak to someone. That’s a matter for Trinitarian theology and well outside the scope of this post.

I mean small-m modalism in the sense that the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine are masks that God wears when addressing individual human beings.

Why? I suppose it’s because individual humans can best be reached on a level that resonates with them personally. God knows this because God created humans, and therefore chooses to play by His own rulebook.

So what does this mean in practice?

It means that while we seek out God according to our ability, it means there’s no place to criticize (help, but not criticize!) another who has an equally valid yet different perception.

For example, the “Divine Feminine” shtick doesn’t resonate with me (can you tell from my pronouns?). Never has and never will. It doesn’t mean I have license to put down someone to whom it does resonate.

It also means that one for whom the “Divine Masculine” shtick doesn’t resonate, they’ve no place to put me down for it, either.

Ultimately, the question of God’s gender is adiaphora. That’s a term from Lutheran theology meaning “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

And no, we shouldn’t sweat the small stuff. We should be sweating the major issues on our journey of spiritual development. We should be more concerned about our biases, our psychological and emotional baggage, and living as children of the Light.

So if somebody says God wants them to eat live babies, you should be worried and stand in their way. If somebody simply refers to God as “She” without prejudice to God’s gender(less)ness, then it’s not that big of a deal.
